About Día de los Muertos:
The Day of the Dead is celebrated on Oct 31 thru Nov 2. It’s a time of honoring past ancestors and family traditions.
Dia de los Muertos is not affiliated with Halloween. However, our culture has taken the two and combined them.
Halloween is about self: decorating yourself, getting yourself candy, partying for yourself.
Dia de los Muertos is about giving to those who have gone on – to those outside yourself. It is about remembering.
The skull – when affiliated with Halloween – is thought of as scary and morbid.
The skull – when affiliated with Dia de los Muertos – is thought of as a reminder, not of something morbid, but of those who were loved and have gone on.
It is a symbol of life and of love and happiness for those who have already pasted on.
What you’ll learn:
In this class we’ll talk about the history of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and enjoy reminiscing about past family and their importance to us as we decorate a mask in their honor.
The class is for ages 10 and up. Please wear clothing (or bring an apron) appropriate for using acrylic paints.
Meet the Teacher:
Mary Sanders Lazenby is a full-time artist and Rock Hill native. Art has been a vital part of her life as a child and continues to bring her joy each day.
She attended the SC State Arts program as a middle schooler, and the SC Governor’s School for the Arts (1990).
While her passion has always been drawing and painting, she also also spent roughly 15 years doing jewelry designing and been published for her Art dolls.
Currently, Mary continues to draw, paint, create her Day of the Dead Masks, and hand-makes sketchbooks and journals.
